FileMaker Server Advanced 12 - Fundamentals
Setting up a FileMaker server instance is one of those tasks you may only do "once in a while". It's simply not one of those things you do on a daily basis. However, knowing what the process is, and some of the details behind how the whole "Server Client" thing works, is certainly beneficial.
In this almost hour long video, I talk about my recent experience with setting up a new FileMaker 12 Advanced server and cover some of the benefits and "need to know" information about the process. If you're a developer, and you develop on your local machine, then using the developer licensed version of FileMaker Server Advanced, at only $99, can provide some great benefits - even if it's "just you".
If you've ever wondered about setting up a FileMaker server, or you'll be pursuing FileMaker certification, then this video should have some good details to chew on. I cover permissions, troubleshooting and initial setup.
Also, with the advent of FileMaker 12's new support for external containers, the knowledge behind permissions and how FileMaker server hosts this information is insightful. Especially if you've not already investigated this new feature of FileMaker 12.
If you have additional information about using FileMaker Server then feel free to add to the comments on this post!

CWP in FileMaker Server
Hi, Matt.
Great video. Congratulations.
In minute 2 you say that "The Advanced in FileMaker Server simply means that you will have access to IWP and you will be able to do Custom Web Publishing".
As you didn´t mention CWP when you talked about FileMaker Server, maybe someone could think that you need the Advanced version to do CWP when, as you know, you can do CWP with just FileMaker Server.
It´s just to avoid confusion in new users...

Thanks
Yes, you're right on the custom web publishing. My main goal was to let developer's know they could have and work with their own local copy of server for the cost of the Developer License. And also to point out some of the main things you need to know.

Developing with server and fm pro on same pc
Is it ok to develop a seperation model with the ui opened in fmprom12 and the data files opened in server both running on the same pc. Filemaker docs say its not designed for this but it seems to work for me. Just get a share warning dialog when opening ui file in fmpro 12. When cleared , then I run both.
Any reason I shouldn't develop this way?
Thanks,
CJ Watson
Filemaker pro licenses
Hello.
Please excuse such a question.
If I develop for server advanced then my customers can access the database trough the web browser? So they don't need filemaker pro licenses. Is this correct?
Yes, you can. But...
You can, but Instant Web publishing is terrible (at least as of this reply) at rendering your layout. It will get better.
Custom web publishing gives you the greatest amount of control but you'll need to learn how to do what you want using PHP (unless you pull via ODBC/XDBC) and you're using another programming language like ruby, etc.
Ultimately, with Server Advanced you can pull the information stored within your FileMaker db and do whatever you want with it.
And yes, without paying additional licenses. It's why Server Advanced is so much more than regular Server.
Hope this helps.
Matt
